Sweet Tomato & Basil Marinara Sauce

FEATURING Low Sodium Breadstick #2572

Who doesn’t love a good breadstick? How about a whole grain, low sodium version? This breadstick is delicious and is the perfect side to any Italian meal.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 8oz cans crushed tomatoes
  • Fresh basil, 4 or 5 leaves, finely sliced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ onion, diced
  • ½ cup carrots, diced (small)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • ½ tbsp sugar
  • ½ tbsp salt

PREPARATION

In a medium-size pot, heat olive oil. Before it gets too hot, add basil leaves and fry them gently. Add onions and carrots and cook until soft and translucent.

Add sugar, tomato paste, crushed tomatoes and salt. Reduce heat to simmer and stir constantly for about 10 minutes, or until a soft texture.

Add additional fresh chiffonade (thin slices) of basil before serving.

Serving suggestions: Use as a dipping sauce for breadsticks and calzones or simply as a fresh pasta sauce.

Chef Tips:

This sweet type of marinara sauce surprisingly doesn’t have garlic in it, allowing for a deep and sweet flavor of basil to blend in the sauce.
